Which Smart Doorbell Should I Buy

As expert installers of home security tech, we often get asked the question: Which Smart Doorbell should I buy?
There’s a lot of choice, so to make it simple we’ll tell you which doorbell we recommend based on what’s most important to you.
Whether you want the best overall doorbell, the easiest to use, the best doorbell camera, or the cheapest doorbell, we’ve got you covered.
The Best Smart Doorbells
Updated November 2025 with the latest releases
All smart doorbells record videos of movement, connect to your phone for notifications, and allow you to talk 2-way with people at your door. It’s how well they do these things, and any extra features, that means a doorbell has made it onto our list.
Generally we'd recommend sticking with the same brand for your doorbell and any cameras you get, as it's simpler and more convenient to see everything in one app, and if there's a subscription it's cheaper. Check out our guide to Which Security Camera Should I Buy if you're considering a camera too!

Best Overall Smart Doorbell (wired)
Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro (4k)
Which Smart Doorbell should I buy? This one…! If you have a plug socket near your front door, or you have high voltage doorbell wiring, then the best overall smart doorbell is the Ring Wired Video Doorbell Pro.

We love:
- Sleek design – this doorbell looks great on your wall
- Square camera angle with 4k quality - a big improvement over other Ring doorbells
- Radar for birds eye view and more accurate alerts
- Permanent power for no battery faff
- Ring’s easy to use app
- Works brilliantly alongside Ring Cameras or the excellent Ring Alarm – you get whole home security in one place
Ring make brilliant doorbells, that’s why you see them everywhere. If someone asks us “Which Smart Doorbell Should I buy?” This is our answer, it’s the best of the bunch.
This doorbell can only be wired, it has no built-in battery, so it either needs existing doorbell wiring (if it provides 16-24 volts, most don't), or it can be powered by a nearby indoor plug socket using one of Ring’s plug adapters. This is the best option and can be booked on our Ring Doorbell installation page, for one of our Technologists to install for you.
The Ring app is easy to use and consistently reliable. It’s fairly quick to notify you of movement or a doorbell press and to load live 2-way talk. Navigating around past events, changing settings, and snoozing alerts are all reasonably easy to do.
Ring accessories and connectivity are great. You can get a plug in chime, and Ring doorbells work brilliantly with Amazon Echo (Alexa) speakers, which can also chime when someone presses your doorbell. Echo Show smart displays are great with a Ring doorbell, once set up it will automatically show you the live video from your doorbell when someone rings it – genuinely useful in your kitchen or on your desk.
Things to bear in mind
- If you have an existing chime, this may not work so we suggest a Ring plug in chime instead
- You need a subscription to look back at past videos – without this you can still view the camera and answer your doorbell live, but if you miss something you won’t be able to see what happened. The subscription is fairly cheap if you have multiple Ring devices, such as a doorbell and a few cameras or the alarm, as one subscription of £79.99 per year covers everything and gives you 180 days of video storage. See the Ring website for full info.
Best Overall Smart Doorbell (battery)
Eufy E340 Battery Doorbell
If you need a battery powered doorbell, then the best overall smart doorbell is the Eufy E340 Battery Doorbell.

We love:
- Modern design – this doorbell looks good on your wall
- 2 cameras - a 2k quality main camera and a second that keeps an eye on your doorstep for parcels
- Quick-release battery, so you can buy a spare so your doorbell is never out of action
- Subscription-free - all video is stored on the doorbell itself or on a microSD card in plug in chime you can buy separately
- Works brilliantly alongside Eufy Cameras and the Eufy Alarm – for whole home security
Eufy's latest top range battery doorbell is our pick for the best battery doorbell, and was the winner of our Battery Doorbell Wars comparison video on Facebook, Insta and TikTok.
You can buy a spare battery, so even if you live in a busy area that drains your battery a bit quicker, you can keep the spare charged and ready to swap in, without having to bring the whole doorbell inside to be charged (which is the case with cheaper battery doorbells). Eufy's plug in chime works great, and if you put a microSD card in it then video will be stored on this rather than the doorbell.
Eufy sell an excellent range of cameras, none of which require a subscription. You can buy a Eufy HomeBase which plugs in inside your home for extra storage as well as adding additional AI smarts to your doorbell and cameras motion detection. You can even add a hard drive to it for a huge amount of extra storage.
Things to bear in mind
- If you have an existing chime, this likely won't work
- The doorbell and app can be a little slower than Ring's, taking a few extra seconds to load live video
- Some people report that their doorbell occasionally misses movement at their door
Easiest To Use
Ring Battery Video Doorbell Plus
We think all Ring doorbells are easy to use, as they all use the same Ring app. But if we had to pick one, it would be the Ring Battery Video Doorbell Plus.

We love:
- Ring’s easy to use app
- Square camera angle that’s better than HD (1536p)
- Option of permanent power, or a battery that can be quickly swapped
- Works brilliantly alongside Ring Cameras or the excellent Ring Alarm – you get whole home security in one place
It’s Ring’s mid-range doorbell, so doesn't quite have the same detailed video quality as their top model, but it's still a good picture.
All the other benefits of the best Ring doorbells are here. Like the quick-swap battery, which means you can easily buy a spare. Whilst you will need to charge the battery occasionally (every 1-3 months depending on how busy the area by your door is), this at least means you can have a spare charged and ready. It only takes 2 minutes to swap the charged one in, and your Technologist can show you how to do this during your install service.
The Ring app is the easiest to use. It's laid out simply and navigating around past events, changing settings, and snoozing alerts are all easy to do. If you're subscribed to the Ring Standard Plan then you also get the brilliant 'Doorbell Calls' feature which means you get a call from the Ring app when someone presses the doorbell, this is great because they're harder to miss than the usual notifications.
The final benefit of Ring is the accessories and connectivity. You can change the look of your doorbell with a metallic effect faceplate, coloured faceplate, or even a themed faceplate! The plug in chime is also brilliant for an easy to hear house chime, and you can pick your preferred ring tone. Ring doorbells work brilliantly with the Amazon Echo speakers that have Alexa built in. The speakers can chime when someone presses your doorbell, and we particularly love the Echo Show smart displays, which will automatically show you the live video from your doorbell when someone rings it – genuinely useful in your kitchen or on your desk.
Things to bear in mind
- If you have an existing chime, this may not work so we suggest a Ring plug in chime instead
- You need a subscription to look back at any past videos recorded – without this you can still view the camera and answer your doorbell live, but if you miss something you won’t be able to see what happened. The subscription is fairly cheap if you have multiple Ring devices, such as a doorbell and a few cameras or the alarm, as one subscription of £80 per year covers everything and gives you 180 days of video storage. See the Ring website for full info.
Cheapest Smart Doorbell
Tapo TD210 Battery Doorbell
At just £44.99 with a plug in chime and no subscription this doorbell is a bargain, though you do need to buy a microSD card for video storage (for less than £20)

We love:
- The price! It doesn't get cheaper than this (other than knock off brands on Amazon/AliExpress, but these are not to be trusted, the apps are often unsafe)
- Subscription-free (with a microSD card)
- Decent quality 2k camera
- Indoor chime is included
It’s the cheapest doorbell available, and it ticks all the minimum boxes, but it won't match the features from the best options and there are some flaws.
It does all the right things - 2-way talk, records motion, rings when pressed, and notifies your phone through the app.
Tapo also have a good range of other cameras, as well as smart plugs and lights. All similarly well priced but effective.
Things to bear in mind
- You'll need to buy a microSD card to avoid paying a subscription - these are cheap, though you do need to buy the right type, we recommend this 128gb one (£16 at time of writing), Tapo have more info and a full list here
- The whole doorbell has to come off the wall and brought inside to be charged, and it takes up to 7 hours to fully charge
- The camera angle isn't the best, it's wider than tall, so you won't see your doorstep and might even miss someone's face if they're stood very close to the doorbell
- It can take a while for videos to load in the app
- With video stored on the doorbell itself, if it's stolen then you won't be able to see your videos
- Customers report issues with motion detection sometimes being inaccurate
That's it! Once you've bought your doorbell head to our page of smart doorbell installation services, and we'll connect you with a local expert Technologist who can install and set your doorbell up for you.
They'll do your installation to a high standard, set up the app and optimise the settings for your home, and show you how to do all the important things (like viewing live and past events, answering the door, and sharing videos), so you can use your doorbell with confidence.
